$12,180 fine for hosting a Bible Study in their own home.
I just Googled "couple arrested+bible studies in home" and was shocked at how many instances of this type have taken place in these United States, going back to 2009. We already KNOW this kind of thing is happening in other nations, but HERE?
Well, Jesus said there'd be days like this. What comes next? Will families be carted away in the "Patty Wagon" for gathering on Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving? After all, these are Christian holidays, right?
We will soon be forced to disguise our gatherings as Amway meetings, Super Bowl parties and Cinco de Mayo festivals?
Perhaps we can learn a lesson from what happened to this couple. To my knowledge, they had a cross in their yard and drew attention to themselves. Maybe that wasn't wise. Personally I'd rather remain the smallest bug in the bog and continue my life-changing gatherings for as long as possible than get locked up and receive additional, "official" attention once I'm released. Not to mention the money to be spent on a lawyer, tome away from work, the strain upon caring for your kids and pets while you sit in jail.
Now, my wife and I have discussed this before: what would happen if I were hauled-off in the wee hours by some men in black? I've resigned myself to the fact that, if this ever took place, it's because God needed me to reach people in jail. After all, preachers in the 3rd world get arrested ON PURPOSE so they can go in and minister. They don't have Chaplains like myself, popping in and out at will.
A word to all you House Churchers: think small. Stay off the radar in your neighborhood. Be careful and prayerful about how and when you gather. Personally, as a Workplace Chaplain whose mission is to establish Simple Churches in the workplace (2 or 3 gathered in His Name), I've received my share of persecution - light resistance compare to many around the globe. From certified letters sent by attorneys telling me to stay off the property to employees who've registered complaints over the way I've prayed (despite having encouraged people to leave who might not appreciate my invocations), not to mention those who won't give me the time of day for a myriad of reasons, many of which are all in their heads.
To anyone who thinks they're safe in an institutional church environment, or under a big denominational umbrella, think again. From sanctuary shootings to the recent legal requirements forcing Catholic hospitals and universities to buy insurance for abortions which goes against church teachings, the sniper fire has already begun.
The good news? As the days get darker and darker, it won't take much light shining from you and me to draw those who are seeking. Sure, one lit match during any enemy bombing in World War II could draw fire from miles away. So, let's be wise and discerning in how we minister, whether at home or at work. As Jesus said, John 12:32, "...if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me."
When all men are drawn unto Him, it appears many will come with torches and pitch forks. Let's be motivated by faith, not fear. Wisdom, not presumption.
Every blessing,
